The Way Music Connects to Me

As part of our celebration of World Autism Acceptance month, we asked our Milton Keynes member, Harry, to reflect on his special interest, which is music. This is what he had to say.

Music is my special interest. But it’s more than that. Music has the power to make me feel good like nothing else does. It gives me some peace for a while. I can connect to it. It makes me realise who I really am.

The way I connect to music is magical. I can remember telling my teachers and friends in primary school that I would love to become a DJ when I’m older and here I am now at the age of 23 DJing and having my own Radio Show at Milton Keynes Hospital called Harry’s Happy Hour which I have done every Monday for the past six years for the hospital patients.

Music is my safe place as it helps me relax. Different music genres help with my mood. Music can calm me down or make me smile and giggle. Music makes me dance. Music makes me forget the world. Music helps me focus and look for positive things. Music helps me in bad times. I’ve lost people close to me over the years, so I find I can listen to music that reminds me of them. This brings back good memories of people lost.

I am proud to be autistic and I know that I am special in my own way. I can do creative things with music. That is my superpower.

Through my music passion, I discover more and more that music and autism fit together. Think about a melody. Writing melodies gives me an outlet to release emotions (good or bad) and as a result makes me feel more in control of my feelings. As I said, music has a magical connection to me.
