Mindfulness, Horses and Wellbeing: A Special Day for Talkback Members

A day spent connecting with nature, practising mindfulness and building confidence gave Talkback members an opportunity to celebrate their achievements and develop valuable skills for everyday life.

In July, a group of Talkback members enjoyed a special Wellbeing Day at Sunrise Farm, near Leighton Buzzard, hosted by the charity Horses Helping People.

The event brought together members who had previously completed a four-week mindfulness course with the charity, providing an opportunity to revisit what they had learned, share their experiences and put their skills into practice in a peaceful, supportive environment.

With the help of some very special four-legged friends, the day demonstrated how taking time to slow down, connect with others and become more aware of our thoughts and feelings can make a real difference to our wellbeing.

Learning Mindfulness Through Nature

Mindfulness is about paying attention to the present moment, recognising our thoughts and feelings, and developing a greater awareness of how we respond to the world around us.

For Talkback members, these skills can be particularly valuable in helping to recognise emotions, manage stressful situations and build confidence in everyday life.

Horses Helping People specialises in mindfulness activities involving horses and Shetland ponies, creating a unique environment where participants can practise being present, develop self-awareness and enjoy the calming influence of nature.

During their visit, members spent time with the horses and ponies, including Dollar, Louie and Amethyst. These gentle animals provided a wonderful opportunity to slow down, observe their surroundings and reconnect with the mindfulness techniques they had learned during the course.

The experience wasn’t simply about spending time with animals. It was about creating space to reflect, feel comfortable and practise skills that can be used well beyond the farm.

A Day of Creativity, Connection and Discovery

Alongside spending time with the horses, members enjoyed a variety of activities designed to encourage relaxation, creativity and greater awareness of their senses.

A sensory walk encouraged participants to focus on the sights, sounds and sensations of the natural environment, helping them practise staying in the present moment.

An outdoor art session gave members the opportunity to experiment with charcoal drawing, using their favourite horses as inspiration. The activity encouraged observation, creativity and concentration in a relaxed setting.

Members also took part in gentle self-massage exercises, learning techniques to help ease tension around the head, neck and arms, before enjoying a freestyle drumming session.

Each activity offered a different way to explore mindfulness, demonstrating that wellbeing can be supported through creativity, movement, sensory experiences and simply taking time for ourselves.

Just as importantly, the day provided an opportunity for members to spend time together, share experiences and strengthen friendships.

Building Skills That Make a Difference Every Day

While mindfulness is often associated with relaxation, its benefits can extend much further.

Through their four-week course and the Wellbeing Day, Talkback members explored practical techniques to support their emotional wellbeing and develop greater self-awareness.

These included recognising their thoughts and feelings, becoming more aware of physical sensations, identifying early signs of stress and understanding when they might need to pause or take a break.

Developing these skills can help individuals feel more confident in managing everyday situations, responding to challenges and making decisions about their own wellbeing.

For Talkback, this is an important part of supporting members to become more independent, build confidence and develop the skills they need to thrive.

The Wellbeing Day provided an opportunity to reinforce that learning in a welcoming environment, allowing members to practise familiar techniques while discovering new ways to look after themselves.

Celebrating Progress and Personal Achievement

The day was also a celebration of the progress members had made since beginning their mindfulness journey.

Having completed the four-week course, they were able to reconnect with the techniques they had learned, explore new activities and enjoy the experience alongside friends and peers.

From trying charcoal drawing and drumming to spending time with the horses, every activity offered an opportunity to build confidence, discover new interests and enjoy a sense of achievement.

These experiences reflect something central to Talkback’s approach: meaningful progress often comes through small steps, new experiences and the confidence to try something different.

We would like to say a huge thank you to Horses Helping People, their dedicated team and, of course, the wonderful horses and Shetland ponies for making the day so memorable.

The experience was a reminder that developing independence and improving wellbeing isn’t always about achieving something big. Sometimes, it’s about learning to recognise how we feel, knowing when to take a moment for ourselves and building the confidence to approach everyday life with greater resilience.

And those are skills worth celebrating.
