Cultivation Street Week

Last week was Cultivation Street week and our colleague Nicola Martin took some time out to find out what this was all about.

“Cultivation Street week, takes place from 7th – 13th March and is where we celebrate outdoor spaces. Including those created by schools, businesses, communities and individuals.  The outdoor spaces and gardens can be used in any way, so long as they encourage people to spend more time enjoying the outdoors.

“Because getting outdoors and enjoying nature can have many benefits to our mental and physical health. These include:

  • Helping you to take time out and relax.
  • Improve your mood.
  • Improve confidence and self-esteem.
  • Reduce feelings of stress and anger.
  • Help you to be more active.
  • Improve physical health.
  • Connect with your local community.
  • Reduce loneliness.
  • Help you meet new people.

“Not only is it important to spend more time outdoors but it can also be hugely beneficial to have a community around you that provides support.  Creating an outdoor space for everyone to enjoy is a good place to start, because it helps to bring people together. You might find people who love gardening and wildlife just as much as you do, or other interests you have in common.

“If you start planning now, maybe you could have your own community garden up and running for next year.”
